Upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it…Cornerstone Ministry Cowboy Church was founded on this verse in 2006. Cornerstone was birthed from the Cowboy Church at 4K Arena. The Cowboy Church was a place where people came to hear the word preached and fellowship with other people. All barriers of religion were dropped and people worshiped God with a pure heart. Seeing a need for reaching the lost and unchurched in the community, talk began about building a church. A remnant of people who were fed up with religion and “church as usual” answered the call of the Great Commission, by opening the doors of a one room cabin on Cordova Road.
Pastor Frank Mathis was given a vision years earlier of building a church. He assumed he was to grow an existing church. Realizing that Cornerstone was God’s fulfillment of the earlier vision, plans were made to purchase land on Bethel Road. On July 16, 2006 an offering of $18,000 was taken up to purchase 6 acres of land, 5 acres for our new campus and 1 acre for our cemetery.
We continued to meet weekly at the cabin as contractors from Shreveport came down every Saturday and worked. On January 25, 2009 we moved into a debt free sanctuary that would seat 200 people comfortably. In 2011, the need for a fellowship hall and youth building was evident and we borrowed the money to have that completed. Easter Sunday 2012 we opened the doors to Freedom Hall.
On August 8, 2014 we purchased 6 more acres to fulfill the vision of a covered arena beside the church.
Over the years things have changed, but the vision has stayed the same. The original building has now become our Kids Ministry Building named “The Foundation.” The second building named “Freedom Hall” is now our temporary sanctuary.
In January 2023 the need for a teens building was evident and we stepped out in faith and built a 2000 square foot building to house our offices and our future generation of believers, our teens. The building is named “The Haven” because the teens need a safe haven to come to in this day and age.
Our vision for the future in order to stay in line with our original vision, is to turn the teen building into a foyer for the future sanctuary.
At that time the teens will return to “Freedom Hall” and it will go back to its original intent a fellowship hall and youth building.
From humble beginnings in a one room cabin, Cornerstone has flourished to a 12 acre campus, with three buildings, a cemetery and a vision.
To sum it all up, Cornerstone is a Bible-believing, Israel supporting, kingdom-minded, disciple building church with one goal in mind…fulfilling the Great Commission one soul at a time.
